Food Journeys: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

5 min read · Planner Features · Updated June 2026  |  Plan this trip with AI →

Food Journeys organize a city's iconic dishes into a walkable, meal-by-meal sequence instead of a long restaurant list. Here's exactly how it works, using a Madurai trip as the example.

1

Start your trip with Madurai

Open the planner, set your travellers, and add Madurai as your city. The example below shows a 2-day Madurai trip, with one extra detail visible: a Primary Spot anchor labeled "wedding," set for Day 1 at 10:00 AM for 60 minutes — a fixed appointment the rest of the day plans around, separate from the Food Journey itself.

Madurai added as City 1 — 2 days, with a Primary Spot anchor already set.

2

Open Food & Drink

The Pick Spots screen opens on Sightseeing by default. A Food & Drink tab sits right next to it — that's the door into Food Journeys.

Note: this screenshot is from a different city's planner (tabs are identical everywhere) — Madurai's own tab opens directly into Step 3 below.
3

Land on the city's Food Journey

For Madurai, that tab opens straight into a dish-first search bar — type "biryani" or "filter coffee" instead of a restaurant name — and meal-period filter chips along the top. Below that sits the main event: a dedicated Madurai Food Journey card, tracking "0 of 14 foods added," with its own tagline: "Experience Madurai through its iconic foods. Overwhelm your food experience, not your tummy."

The Madurai Food Journey card — five collapsed meal-arc sections, each with a dish count.

Five arcs follow the shape of an actual day: Start the Day (2), Fuel Up (4), Cool Down (3), Sweet Stop (3), Late Night (2) — 14 dishes total.

4

Browse the full food feed

Scroll past the Journey card and there's a broader results grid — restaurants and hotels, each with a rating, time-of-day tag, and "+ Add to Trip." Useful for anything the curated 14 dishes don't cover.

5

Expand a meal arc

Expand any meal period to see dishes, photos, tags, and walking time between stops — for example, Filter Kaapi to Malli Poo Idli is a 1-minute walk; Kari Dosa to Mutton Biryani is 27 minutes.

6

Open the full Food Guide

Tap "Browse Full Madurai Food Guide" and a modal opens with every documented dish for the city — 34 in total — filterable by category: Breakfast (7), Meals (7), Snacks (5), Street Food (2), Sweets (7), Drinks (6).

The Journey answers "what should I prioritize." The full guide answers "what else is out there." Either way, dishes are added one at a time — you pick exactly the ones you want, not all 14 or all 34 at once.

Why the Walking Distances Matter

Most food guides are restaurant-first: a list, sorted by rating or popularity, leaving you to figure out logistics. Food Journeys flips that — it's dish-first and time-of-day-first, with real walk times stitched between stops so the sequence is something you can actually follow on foot or by short ride, not just admire on a screen.
