Kerala's 580 km coastline is one of India's most diverse — tropical beaches, lagoon backwaters, Portuguese forts, fishing communities. This guide covers the best stops on India's finest coastal drive.
Kovalam → Varkala → Kollam → Alleppey → Kochi → Cherai → Kozhikode → Kannur → Kasaragod
Kovalam — Kerala's most famous beach resort. Good for ayurvedic treatments. The lighthouse marks Lighthouse Beach.
Varkala (50 km north) — cliff-top beach with red laterite cliffs dropping to the sea. More atmospheric than Kovalam. Café-lined cliff promenade. Stay for sunset.
Kollam to Alleppey by ferry — 8-hour boat through the backwaters, costs ₹400. Kerala's best day out. Alleppey is the houseboat capital — negotiate directly with operators at the jetty.
Go straight to Fort Kochi. Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry Palace, Jew Town synagogue. One full day minimum. Take the ferry across — part of the experience.
Cherai Beach (Vypin Island, ferry from Kochi) — 14 km of clean beach with backwaters on one side, sea on the other. Good for early morning dolphin sightings.
Where Vasco da Gama first landed in India (1498). Kappad Beach marks the spot. Excellent for Malabar biryani and fish curry. Local and unpretentious.
Kannur — Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach (4 km, India's longest). St. Angelo's Fort.
Kasaragod — Bekal Fort, Kerala's largest fort, perched over the sea. Spectacular at sunset. End of the route.
