At midnight, on the forest road below Coimbatore's Velliangiri Hills, headlamps start moving uphill in a line that doesn't really stop until dawn. Some of the people on that trail are trekkers chasing a 1,850 m Western Ghats summit. Most of them are pilgrims, and they're not climbing for the view — they're climbing toward a Shiva shrine the Tamil tradition calls Thenkailayam, South Kailash, where the lingam is said to have appeared on its own rather than been placed by anyone.
Bring: Headlamp · 3L+ water · Grippy trekking shoes · Warm layer for the summit
The seven hills of Velliangiri are counted off as devotees ascend, each carrying its own small shrine, building toward the Velliangiri Andavar Temple at the seventh. The lingam at the summit is described as Swayambu — self-manifested rather than installed — which is part of why this climb functions as genuine pilgrimage rather than a temple visit with a hike attached. Most pilgrims start at midnight specifically so they arrive as priests begin the dawn puja, timing the climb to the ritual rather than the other way around.
What makes the procession itself remarkable is scale: this isn't a handful of devotees on a quiet trail. Hundreds of headlamps move up the dark hillside together, with bells and chanting carrying ahead in sections where the forest opens. It's one of the more striking things to witness in South Indian pilgrimage culture, distinct from the famous Sabarimala or Palani climbs in both scale and atmosphere.
The first stretch, base to the 3rd hill, runs through dense forest on a root-covered trail — tribal shops along this section sell water and snacks in season, and this is the last reliable place to top up before the climb gets serious. From the 3rd to the 7th hill, the trail steepens and the forest opens into rocky, exposed terrain with no flat sections and no shade. This is also the stretch with no water at all, so the fitness exam at the base exists precisely because this section is where past medical emergencies have happened.
Most pilgrims go quiet or start chanting through the hardest part — there's a collective rhythm to it that outside observers describe as carrying people through sections they might not manage alone. The temple appears at the top as the sky starts to lighten, and by most accounts the arrival itself, after a night of climbing, is what people remember rather than the difficulty of getting there.
The seven named hills double as natural progress markers and viewpoints, though the real photographic payoff is concentrated at two points:
Drive or take a shared auto from Coimbatore to the Poondi base near the Venkateshwara Temple area — about 40 km, roughly an hour. Cars reach the base checkpoint directly, where the medical exam is conducted before anyone is allowed onto the trail. Most pilgrims and trekkers leave Coimbatore around 10–11 PM to begin the climb at midnight, timed to reach the summit for the dawn puja.
Worth knowing if you're building a longer Coimbatore itinerary: the Isha Yoga Center, with its Adiyogi statue and Dhyanalinga, sits about 30 km from the trailhead and is culturally connected to Velliangiri's Shaiva tradition — a natural pairing for the day before or after the climb. Siruvani Waterfalls and the hillside Marudhamalai Temple in Coimbatore itself are easier additions if you want a gentler day around the main trek.
