Hampta Pass: One Day, Two Different Worlds

8 min read · Multi-Day Trek · Himachal Pradesh · Updated June 2026  |  Plan this trip →

You spend the first two days of this trek surrounded by green — meadows, pine forest, a glacial stream loud enough to talk over. Then you climb to 4,270 metres, cross a single ridge, and the entire landscape changes before lunch. Behind you: Kullu Valley, lush and familiar. Ahead: Lahaul, brown and bare and silent, like someone switched the planet underneath your feet. Most first-time Himalayan trekkers remember Hampta Pass for that one transition more than anything else on the route.

Why People Do This Trek

Hampta Pass is popular because it delivers a genuine Himalayan crossover experience without the time or technical commitment of a longer expedition. The contrast between Kullu's meadows and Lahaul's high desert happens within a single day's walk, which is rare — most treks that show you radically different terrain need a week or more to do it. The optional extension to Chandratal Lake, a turquoise alpine lake at 4,250 m ringed by snow peaks, adds a second, completely different payoff for the small additional effort of a side trip from Chhatru.

Route Breakdown

DaySegmentDistanceWhat It's Like
1Jobra → Chika Camp4 kmShort, gentle start through pine and deodar forest along the Rani Nallah stream.
2Chika → Balu Ka Ghera8 kmThe valley opens up — Deo Tibba and Mt Indrasan fill the skyline at camp.
3Balu Ka Ghera → Pass (4,270 m) → Shea Goru9 kmThe day the trek exists for — snow ascent, the crossover view, then a loose scree descent into Lahaul.
4Shea Goru → Chhatru5 kmShort descent back to road access; civilisation and Spiti-bound traffic reappear.
5Chandratal Lake → return to ManaliOptional extension at dawn, then the dramatic drive back over Rohtang Pass.

Start the pass-crossing day before 6 AM — it's long, and poor visibility on the Lahaul descent is the trek's main real hazard, not the altitude itself.

Getting There

Fly or bus into Kullu-Manali Airport or Manali's bus stand, with good connections from Delhi and Chandigarh. From Manali, a shared jeep covers the roughly two-hour drive to Jobra, the usual trailhead. One honest flag here: the trailhead's exact pin is approximate rather than precisely verified — it's tagged as a general "Hampta Pass Trek" area near Manali rather than a confirmed Jobra village location, and a separate "Hampta Pass Trek Base" near Bashisht also exists. Worth checking current Maps listings or confirming with your operator rather than treating any single pin as final. Return from Chhatru is via the Rohtang Pass road, weather-dependent — arrange this with your operator in advance rather than assuming it's straightforward on the day.

Manali is also the road gateway to Leh, which makes this a natural pairing with a Ladakh trek on a longer two-week Himalayan trip — same altitude range, an entirely different landscape.
